The master drummer from Africa,radiates warmth and energy with his being and through music.
Born in 1938 into a Griot family and grewing up with messenger drum in the village, he more or less became a drummer at birth.
He is a celebrated artist, who plays a wide variety of percussion instruments including: Djembé, Congas, Timbales, Bongos, Cabassa, Steel-drums, Cowbells and Talking-Drums to name but a few.
He has performed in the USA, Europe and Africa and has a repertoire of musical styles ranging from African traditional and modern music, to Jazz, Funk, Blues, Gospel and Latin American.
He has even accompanied readings of the German poet Gregor Laschen.
His professional career began in 1962 with Mamadou Doumbia, a famous African composer, singer and guitarist, with whom he
played until 1971.
In 1975 Souleymane Touré joined the legendary Radio & TV Orchestra of the Metropole Abidjan (Ivory Coast), conducted by Bonkana Maiga from Mali. At that time he also started performing with Manu Dibango, saxophonist from Kamerun.
In 1982 Souleymane Touré founded a band called ”Nighty Rebbel“ with singer Alpha Blondy, and made the charts with a hit song
”Brigadier Sabari“.
Since 1992 he has been living in Berlin, Germany, where he teaches and performs with various groups and artists including:
MfA KERA & Black Heritage (African Jazz), Sasha Pushkin from Russia (Boom Beat Funplugged), EASY GOIN´ (Afro-Pop-Jazz), Black Stompers (New Orleans Style).
His unique musical style and personal dynamic brings new energy and lend a special touch to their music.
1993 he formed in Berlin the ensemble `Academy Percussion International´ together with Ekow Alabi (Ghana), Rocco Kofie (Germany), Akinola Famson (Nigeria) and his daughter the singer Djatou Touré (Ivory Coast).
